Remove Parquet flooring With a Floor Scrapper

Removing parquet flooring with a floor scraper is a manageable project, but it can require a bit of patience and the right techniques to ensure clean and efficient removal. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get the job done effectively:

Steps to Remove Parquet Flooring with a Floor Scraper

  1. Gather the Right Tools:

    • Use a heavy-duty floor scraper with a sharp, replaceable blade. If you’re working on a large area, a power scraper or ride-on scraper can make the job faster.

    • You may also need a pry bar and hammer to lift stubborn parquet pieces or to start the process along edges.

  2. Prepare the Area:

    • Clear the room of furniture and other obstructions. Cover doorways and vents with plastic to contain dust and debris.

    • Wear protective equipment, such as gloves, eye protection, and a dust mask, as the removal process can create dust and sharp fragments.

  3. Loosen the Parquet Flooring:

    • Begin at one edge or corner of the room. Use a pry bar and hammer to lift the first few pieces, creating space to position your scraper.

    • If the parquet flooring is glued down, you may need to use a heat gun or adhesive remover to soften the adhesive for easier scraping.

  4. Start Scraping:

    • Insert the floor scraper blade under the edge of the parquet piece and push forward with steady pressure to lift it from the floor.

    • Use a consistent angle to avoid gouging the subfloor. Apply more pressure for areas with stubborn adhesive.

    • For glued-down parquet, heating the adhesive as you go (using a heat gun or infrared heater) can soften it, making it easier to lift.

  5. Remove Adhesive Residue:

    • Once the parquet is up, adhesive will likely remain on the subfloor. Switch to a sharper blade, if necessary, or use a scraper specifically designed for adhesive removal.

    • For very thick adhesive residue, a chemical adhesive remover may be helpful. Apply it per the manufacturer’s instructions, then scrape it off once it softens.

  6. Clean the Subfloor:

    • After all the parquet and adhesive is removed, vacuum or sweep the area to remove dust and debris.

    • Check the subfloor for any remaining adhesive patches, and use the scraper to remove them to create a smooth, clean surface.
